Autumn Tour Itinerary
Arrival Day: Overnight in Fukuoka City
Arrive in Fukuoka by flight or train and make your way to the tour hotel in the city. After checking in, take some time to explore Fukuoka at your own pace with a relaxed, free-and-easy evening to ease into your Kyushu adventure.
Tour Day 1: Traditions & Onsen
Let the adventure begin! Start the day with seasonal fruit picking, followed by a stroll through charming streets lined with nostalgic old-style shops. Admire a beautiful collection of traditional handmade dolls and visit a historic saké brewery to learn about this age-old craft. End the day with the option to relax in a soothing natural hot spring (onsen) before settling in for the night in Hita.
Tour Day 2: Autumn Colors & Onsen
Take in the breathtaking beauty of Kyushu’s top fall foliage spots, then walk through a unique hand-carved tunnel steeped in history. Explore the otherworldly “Hells of Beppu,” a collection of dramatic hot spring pools. In the evening, enjoy a delicious chef-served sushi dinner and unwind with an optional soak in your hotel’s natural onsen.
Tour Day 3: Gorge & Sacred Dance
Discover an ancient Buddha carved into a cliffside, then visit the atmospheric ruins of a mountaintop castle with sweeping views. Enjoy a scenic walk through the stunning Takachiho Gorge, known for its dramatic cliffs and waterfalls. In the evening, experience a traditional Kagura dance performance at a 1,000-year-old shrine, steeped in myth and legend.
Tour Day 4: Mountains, Craters & Kaiseki
Begin the day with a breathtaking sunrise over the mystical ‘Sea of Clouds,’ followed by a peaceful riverside walk to a revered spiritual power spot. Take a scenic drive up to the dramatic crater of Mount Aso, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. In the evening, unwind at a beautiful ryokan nestled in the Aso-Kuju mountains, featuring both indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths. Cap off the day with an exquisite kaiseki-ryōri dinner — a multi-course feast celebrating seasonal flavors.
Tour Day 5: Castles & City Lights
Explore the majestic Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s top three historic castles, rich in samurai history and architectural grandeur. Enjoy a relaxing cup of green tea in a serene traditional Japanese garden. Return to Fukuoka for a free and easy evening — perfect for dining, shopping, or soaking up the city’s vibrant nightlife.
Departure Day: Farewell & Free Time

What kind of accommodation will I stay in?
You will stay in a mix of clean and comfortable city hotels and traditional Japanese ryokan inns with onsen baths. In the city hotels you will be sleeping in western beds. In the Japanese ryokan inns you will be sleeping in a mix of western beds and traditional Japanese-style futonbeds on tatami mat flooring.
What kind of food can I expect on the tour?
Your trip planner is a passionate foodie. She has carefully selected every eatery to highlight the quality cuisine that Kyushu is so famous for throughout Japan. If you have any dietary restriction please ask us about alternatives available before booking your tour.
How will I travel around?
A comfortable private bus.
How many people can join?
We love small group intimate travel. Maximum participants will be 12 pax.
Is this trip suitable for seniors?
Toggle ContentDefinitely yes! You will be travelling by private bus and accompanied at all times by an English-speaking tour leader. There are no long hikes on this tour but of course you will need to walk around various attractions. There will be some non-paved paths and steps to climb (especially in shrines or temples). It will be no problem if you prefer to skip any activity and wait for the group on the bus or in a seated area.

This tour has been commissioned by Walking Wise Tours & Travel (UK) after extensive discussion of the itinerary with ourselves (Kyushu Journeys). It is based on our recommendations and we will operate and manage all aspects of the tour here in Japan.
